What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid) is a well-known skincare ingredient used to reduce acne by clearing out pores through chemically exfoliating the skin.
When hair follicles get clogged from dead skin cells, dirt and sebum, blackheads, whiteheads or pimples can begin to form. To prevent the formation of blemishes, salicylic acid penetrates the skin in order to dissolve these clogs.
When and how to use it.
Topical doses of salicylic acid can often be found as creams and cleansers as over-the-counter products - typically containing 0.5-5% of the active ingredient.
Salicylic acid is a milder option for those who have sensitive skin as it is not as strong as other ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide. However, because of this, it may take several weeks of consistent usage before results can be seen.
Multiple products containing salicylic acid should not be used in the same routine. This is because using this active ingredient in multiple steps can end up drying out the skin and causing more sebum production, increasing the chances of clogging pores.
It should also be noted that sunscreen should be worn everyday since the use of acids (in the morning or at night) increases the skin’s sensitivity to sun
