What is Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential as part of your health, including your skin. It functions as an antioxidant in order to promote cell turnover in your body when cell damage becomes too high.

The skin is susceptible to damage due to expose to external environments (such as the sun) where free radicals can affect skin health. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in helping the skin’s epidermis in protecting and healing the skin.

What are the benefits of Vitamin C

The anti-inflammatory nature of Vitamin C aids in reducing redness and inflammation caused by acne when used topically. This can help improve the appearance of te skins imperfections and brighten the skin.

After a breakout, skin requires time to regenerate and as a result, scars may develop in the process. Vitamin C promotes the synthesis of collagen in the skin and is vital for rebuilding the structure. Because of this, Vitamin C is effective in speeding up the healing of wounds caused by blemishes,

Things to watch out for:

  • Most Vitamin C products such as boosters and serums have a very short shelf life and are required to be stored in a dark and cool environment in order to preserve its freshness

  • For the best results, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid usage of any expired or discoloured products (Expired vitamin C serums can be identified by a change from a clear liquid to a darkened yellow liquid)

  • Retinol and vitamin C should not be used in the same routine since Vitamin C is water-soluble while retinol is oil-soluble. This clash in solubility affects the ingredients’ ability to be dissolved and absorbed by the skin

Vitamin C and sunscreen

Using Vitamin C and sunscreen (SPF 40+) in the same morning routine is one of the most effective ways to reduce the appearance of scarring and hyperpigmentation. Combining these two ingredients helps protect the skin against UVA rays and neutralize free radical damage caused by the sun.
